Client Spotlight – Kelly Kohn
When Kelly first walked into a local dive shop in the late 1980s, he never imagined it would change the course of his life. “The shop owner was a wonderful mentor and a real leader in the diving community.” Kelly recalls. “He created an environment that made people excited about diving”. That introduction sparked a passion that has lasted nearly four decades and taken Kelly to some of the most fascinating—and sometimes intense—underwater environments.
But for Kelly, diving isn’t just a hobby—it’s also a calling. For the past 26 years, he has served as a member of the Jackson County Sheriff’s Dive Team, a group of 12 certified professional divers deputized to assist law enforcement. “We’re trained to recover evidence—guns, stolen property, even murder weapons—and, unfortunately, sometimes bodies,” he explains. The work is serious and highly skilled, requiring specialized training in evidence handling and proper chain of custody.
Though the dive team is a volunteer unit, members are expected to respond to calls from Central Dispatch 24/7. “We usually get called out one or two times a year to recover physical evidence,” Kelly says. “Thankfully, drownings have been rare—only one in the last few years.”
Despite the range of experiences—from teaching students to recovering stolen evidence—what stands out most to Kelly is the sense of community. “Even today, about 50% of my closest friends are people I met through diving,” he says.
Whether he’s exploring sunken schooners or serving his community through search and recovery, Kelly’s journey is a testament to what can happen when passion meets purpose—and a little adventure.
