Filing season is underway, and many working Americans are already receiving their refunds – but what happens if you were expecting to break even or receive a refund and are facing a bill instead?
First, stay calm and investigate by discussing with your accountant. Have you included every deduction? Has anything changed since filing last year? Second, start to think strategically about how to pay what you owe, particularly if your money is invested, earmarked for retirement, or stashed away in an emergency fund. Lastly, put plans in place now to include tax-mitigating strategies into your financial plan for next year.

Welcome Gordon Hackborn
We are excited to share that Gordon Hackborn has joined our team as our new Client Relationship and Case Manager. While Gordon is stepping into this role as a recent college graduate, he is certainly not new to the office. Many of you know him well – he is Candace’s son and, spent his pre-school years here in the office. Gordon also supported our team as an Administrative Assistant during the summers of 2020, 2021, and 2022.
Before joining Paramount, Gordon worked with North Carolina State University Athletics as a Scouting Analyst for the baseball program. He also spent time with the summer league team, Wilson Tobs, coordinating game‑day logistics and supporting organizational needs. These fast‑paced, detail‑driven roles helped Gordon develop strong analytical and communication skills that will serve him—and our clients—exceptionally well.
Gordon is a recent graduate of North Carolina State University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Sport Management, along with double minors in Business Administration and Accounting.
Gordon will be trained in all aspects of the business so he can support our team and clients effectively.
Currently living in Jackson, Michigan, Gordon enjoys golf, traveling, eating seafood, and spending quality time with friends and family.
Please join us in welcoming Gordon as he begins this next chapter with us. We’re happy to have him on board!

We Asked The Team…
If you could be competitive at the Olympic level, in what sport would you want to compete?
Don: Ice Hockey – I like the physicality of the game
Candace: Biathlon – I think it is cool how they have to control their breathing to make the shot.
Brennan: Alpine Skiing – it’s fun going fast!
Carrie: Slalom Skiing – I like the controlled precision of a slalom course.
Mary Anne: Down Hill Skiing – It’s something I’ve always wanted to do but never had the chance.
Donald: Snow Boarding Half Pipe – I used to snowboard when I was younger but couldn’t do any tricks. It would be fun to be able to do all the flips and turns.
Krystal: Bobsleigh – It looks thrilling and reminds me of an icy roller coaster! Also, you get to take a friend with you and everything is better with friends.
Gordon: Curling – the strategic aspects of the game appeal to me and it wouldn’t take a strong toll physically.

The Forbes Best-In-State Wealth Advisors 2024 ranking, developed by SHOOK Research, is based on an algorithm of qualitative criteria, mostly gained through telephone and in-person due diligence interviews, and quantitative data. This ranking is based upon the period from 6/30/2022 to 6/30/2023 and was released on 4/3/2024. Those advisors that are considered have a minimum of seven years of experience, and the algorithm weighs factors like revenue trends, assets under management, compliance records, industry experience and those that encompass best practices in their practices and approach to working with clients. Portfolio performance is not a criteria due to varying client objectives and lack of audited data. Out of approximately 44,990 nominations, roughly 8,500 advisors received the award. This ranking is not indicative of an advisor’s future performance, is not an endorsement, and may not be representative of individual clients’ experience.
