Client Spotlight –
Pam Sturgill

Many of us have seen the infamous Westminster Dog Show on tv, but that is about the extent of our dog show experience. For Pam Sturgill, however, it has been a significant part of her life since 1989.

Pam is a dog owner, breeder, trainer, and handler. Over the years, she has shown over 20 different dogs, the majority being dogs she co-owned with other people. However, she has “campaigned” three dogs, which Pam explained means that since birth she has trained and shown them at dog shows.

Cali, a Doberman, was the first champion that Pam campaigned. Her second dog, a Bouvier des Flandres named Max, was her most awarded dog. Max was a multi Best-in-Show and Specialty winner. According to Pam, “He was and is the most titled Best-in-Show Bouvier in the history of the breed.”

Max has sired over 24 litters, and Pam’s third campaigned dog, Gabriel, was fathered by Max. Gabriel is just starting his show career but is already a multiple Best-of-Breed winner.

So what all is involved with the sport of showing dogs? Pam said the first step is training. This begins with getting the dog socialized; used to being around other people and dogs. Then, she works with them, a little every day, using a “cookie” reward system to train them.

At the show, judges examine the dogs and judge them according to how closely each dog compares with the “perfect dog”, as defined in the breed’s official standard. The main consideration is the dog’s conformation or overall appearance, temperament, and structure. The judges make these decisions by evaluating the dog “stacking”, which is posing in a standing position for the judge, and “gaiting”, moving the dog around the ring at the proper speed for their breed. The dogs must be a pedigree, six months or older, and registered with the American Kennel Club.

Dog shows take place constantly, all across the country. Pam has to pick and choose which shows she wants to attend, and how often she wants to participate.

In addition to being champion show dogs, all three have also been official Therapy Dogs at hospitals and nursing homes. They visit patients and staff alike, and Pam said that a visit from these dogs makes a big difference in the patient’s lives.

A Mid-Retirement Check-in

Evaluate your retirement beyond health and wealth.

As you move through retirement, it’s important to set time aside to reflect on how you’re doing. While most people often focus on their health and finances, it’s equally as important to think about other areas of your life as you approach the midpoint of your retirement, which could be between the ages of 70 and 80, depending on your longevity. This is the time to ask yourself some broader questions to ensure you’re making the most of the years you’ve worked so hard to enjoy.

A holistic retirement check at the halfway point can make sure you stay on track. To get a better understanding of what you should take into consideration, observe the lives of retirees around you and think about the choices they’ve made. Then, reflect on these questions.
